HASSELBLAD X ONE-PLUS: for photography at the highest level

After the first partnership between Huawei and Leica, which took place with the presentation of the Huawei P9 and P9 PLUS, now it is One Plus to rely on Hasselblad, the famous manufacturer of medium format cameras, to improve the cameras of the next smartphones. A three-year partnership, which had its debut on March 23 on the new OnePlus 9 series with the name "Hasselblad Camera for Mobile" and led OnePlus to invest 150 million euros for the next three years.

The OnePlus 9, like many other smartphones, will continue to use in fact Sony as a sensor, to be precise the Sony IMX789, already seen on 'OPPO Find X3 Pro. This sensor provides better image quality and noise reduction. Through the Hasselblad Pro Mode and using the interface of its image processing software, you can set the ISO, focus, exposure time, white balance, and much more.

In this case, Hasselblad has drawn on its expertise in color science by introducing for OnePlus what is known as Natural Color Calibration, which aims to provide more perceptually accurate color information to photos taken with the OnePlus 9 Pro.

A 48 MP ultra wide-angle camera will also be introduced, representing a leap forward in the quality of shots with this amplitude, especially with regard to distortion in architectural photography, or in all those shots in which there are vertical lines. In addition to the main 48MP sensor, there are two other rear cameras: a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor and another with which you can try your hand at macro photography, with a focus distance of 4 cm from the subject.

For selfie lovers, the front-facing camera takes advantage of a 16-megapixel (f/2.4) Sony IMX471 sensor with fixed focus and electronic stabilization (EIS). While for videomakers, video recording in 8K at 30 fps debuts, while 4K can be recorded at up to 60 fps.

There will also be the FreeForm Lens, which is a lens that uses a series of unique curves to correct incoming light, bringing distortion at the edges of the photos down to about 1%, compared to 10-20% on most ultra-wide-angle cameras so far on other smartphones. A decisive step this that goes hand in hand with the placement of the 48 MP main sensor, capable of taking important shots thanks to the on-chip 2×2 OCL (On-Chip Lens), that is, of a sensor with a micro-lens for each group of four pixels), 12-bit RAW.

In the coming months, the partnership between OnePlus and Hasselblad will also lead to some hardware innovations: a panoramic camera with a 140-degree field of view will arrive, a new technology called T-lens will be introduced for lightning-fast in-camera focusing. Who knows what future innovations will come as a result of this partnership.
