Intro

How to address disinformation in the post-Covid world?

This Challenge asks students and young professionals to develop an innovative proposal on how to tackle disinformation

Participants must focus on one of the three following alternatives and relative implications (it should clearly indicate which one it is tackling):

  •       • develop an EU public policy on how European government could tackle disinformation;
  •       • develop an innovative business model for social networks to fight the spread of fake news and gain reliability;
  •       • develop an innovative business model for online media outlets.
  •

Rewards

Mentoring sessions with experts in the field to further develop the idea.

Visibility for the winner proposals on the social channels of all partners.

Tips

To tackle the problem, we have highlighted 4 action areas:

 Algorithms used by social networks: machine learning algorithms are employed more and more frequently by companies like Google and Facebook. One of the most popular is the “echo chamber effect”, which aims to show contents that are tailored to interests and based on previously shown news.
• Fact checking and de-bunking: these two methods could help handle online rumors and unverified information as they are based on the continuous double check from more than one sources, providing context and background information.
Editorial crowdfunding:  crowdfunding journalism is journalism that is financially sourced by the collection of donations from the general public. This could be really useful in terms of understanding consumer’s needs using this bottom-up approach.
The role of public funding: in a democratic society it is legitimate to wonder about what would be the role of Public Authority in terms of information and how public funding could be used without harm to freedom of expression.

Before working on your proposal we strongly recommend you to carefully read the following provided material: link 1 | link 2

Evaluation Criteria

  1. Creativity: all proposals must be innovative and reflect on the ability of participants to think out of the box. Participants are free to take inspiration from existing solutions from all around the world (duly cited), but they are expected to enrich them with an innovative design or implementation.
    Feasibility: all proposals should be realistic enough to be implemented. Proposals should take into account the existing EU regulatory framework, as well as diplomatic and political quarrels or any other potential impediment to their implementation.
    Impact: the solution should provide concrete benefits for EU citizens, and it should have to potential to solve, at least partially, the problem for its target.
